Academic Activities


  • An experienced faculty consisting of Professors (2), Assistant Professors (2), Associate Professor (1) and Junior Residents (5) from reputed institutes of the country.
  • Department has well equipped separate labs for Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Serology, Immunology, Mycology, Parasitology, Virology & Media preparation according to MCI guidelines. Latest safety cabinets and automated blood culture systems are installed.
  • Well equipped practical lab for 150 undergraduate students.
  • An exclusive museum full of formalin preserved specimens, models, color photographs & color charts of various pathogens & diseases. Models (32), Photographs (120), Specimens (28).
  • Well equipped two Demonstration Rooms for 80+40 students.
  • Departmental library has a collection of over 191 U.G. and P.G. level books including western authors & journals.
  • Well equipped Research Lab for various research projects for P.G. students.
  • Each topic given in the textbook is covered in lectures of M.B.B.S. courses.
  • Quarterly assessment of students by regular class tests.
  • Full cooperation to students in understanding the applied use of Medical Microbiology Practicals.
  • Two M.D. (Microbiology) seats each year & MSc. in Medical Microbiology courses have started from this year.
  • They are posted in the rotation in the following Laboratories: Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Serology, Immunology, Mycology, Parasitology, Virology & Media preparation according to MCI guidelines.

Investigations


  • Bacteriological culture of all types of specimen received from Hospital wing of the college viz Sputum culture, Blood culture, CSF Culture, Pleural fluid culture, Urine culture, Stool culture, Swabs culture, Peritoneal fluid, Body fluid and simultaneously antibiotic sensitivity of all isolated pathogens are also done.
  • Ziehl Neelsen stained smear examination for the presence of acid-fast bacilli and Mycobacterium culture and sensitivity test for Sputum/CSF fluid/Pleural fluid/ Endometrium, Gastric Aspirate, Serum culture and High vaginal swab.
  • Direct microscopic examination for fungal elements and culture for fungus, KOH, and LCB.
  • Serological tests that include Widal test, VDRL test, CRP test, ASO test and Rheumatoid factor.
  • Serological tests that include Widal test, VDRL test, CRP test, ASO test and Rheumatoid factor.
  • The following immunological tests are done in the department by conventional ELISA or enhanced Chemiluminescence based VITROS system:
    Anti-HIV Antibody test
    HBsAg test
    Anti HCV Antibody test
    Neurocysticercosis — Blood sample,
    T.B. PCR
    Dengue IgM/IgG/NS I.
  • The following parasitological investigations are also done.
  • Routine and Microscopic examination of stool.
  • Examination of peripheral blood smears for the presence of Microfilaria. Malarial Parasites and for L.D. Bodies etc.
  • Malaria Antigen for Pf/Pv
  • In addition to these, we are also performing Bacteriological examinations of water and air samples of our college and hospital.
  • Surveillance of Hospital infection viz Wards/OT/ICU/NICU/HICC with detection on multi-resistant bacteria and fungi.
  • Emergency testing facilities are available in HLS.

Research Activities

Department is actively involved in research activities. Current research projects in the department:

  • "Prevalence of Asymptomatic Bacteriuria in Elderly Diabetics".
  • "Epidemiological Study of Fungal isolates from Superficial Mycoses Cases."
  • "Antibiotic Resistance pattern in Escherichia Coli Isolates from Urinary Tract Infection."
  • "Clinical-epidemiology Study of Dermatophytes in a Tertiary Care Hospital".
  • "Prevalence and Antibiotic Susceptibility pattern of Methicillin-Resistant. Staphylococcus aureus in a tertiary care hospital".
  • "Comparative study between Widal & Typhi dot".
  • "Prevalence & Antibiotic Sensitivity Pattern of Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) Isolates at a Tertiary care Hospital, Lucknow".
  • "Role of routine Surveillance of endotracheal aspirate & its value in the diagnosis of ventilator-associated Pneumonia".
  • "Epidemiology, characterization, and drug resistance profiling of Candida isolates from vulvovaginitis at a tertiary care center".
