World TB Day 2018: Department of Pulmonary Medicine.
The World TB day was celebrated in Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Era’s Lucknow Medical
College and Hospital, Lucknow, in which nearly 150 patients and their relatives participated. Speaking on this
occasion, Professor Rajendra Prasad, Professor and Head, Pulmonary Medicine, Era’s Lucknow Medical College
and former Director, Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, Delhi , emphasised that although tuberculosis is 100%
curable disease, in spite of that last year, nearly 17,00,000 people globally and more than 4,80,000 people died in
India. He further elaborated that poor management of existing sensitive and drug resistant tuberculosis patients is
the real reason behind the mortality caused by this disease. Speaking about Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis
(MDR) and Extensively Drug Resistant TB (XDR TB), it is estimated that 6,00,000 MDR cases emerged
globally and 1,47,000 cases of MDR TB emerged in India last year. He emphasised that among the notified cases
of tuberculosis in India, 84000 cases of MDR TB emerged .Out of all 84000 MDR TB cases in India, only 39000
(46%) cases were diagnosed and were started on treatment. He further said, about 54% cases of MDR TB are
not coming to the government programme. How they are treated outside the program, nobody knows about it and
their records are also missing. He further emphasised that Government is providing very costly drugs to MDR
and XDR TB patients and stressed that patients of MDR and XDR TB should avail this free service from the
Government, to prevent death in tuberculosis and finally eliminating this disease altogether. On this occasion Dr.
Saurabh Karmakar , Associate Professor, Dr. Abhishek Agarwal , Associate Professor ,Dr. Anamika Verma,
Assistant Professor, Dr. Anand Verma , Senior Medical Officer and all PG Residents also participated.
