About the Respiratory Technician Program

Respiratory therapy technicians assist doctors in providing consistent respiratory function to patients with breathing problems. A respiratory therapist performs chest physiotherapy on patients to remove mucus from their lungs which makes it easier for them to breathe.

A diploma in Respiratory Therapy Technician is a popular choice for those who wish to work in both home and public healthcare settings, assisting patients with cardio pulmonary abnormalities or deficiencies. The diploma is an intensive full time course that trains students on comprehensive respiratory care of critically ill patients.

Besides in-depth teaching, the training imparted at Era University includes practical training in our state-of-the-art surgical intensive care unit, medical intensive care unit, neuro-intensive care unit, high dependency unit, coronary care unit, cardio thoracic surgical unit, emergency respiratory labs and operation theatres. The theoretical part of the curriculum in the first year covers anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, biostatics and physics. The second year curriculum comprises of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, diagnostic techniques and equipment in cardio-respiratory diseases. Students are exhaustively trained in Respiratory Therapy Techniques, Life Support System and Cardio Pulmonary Rehabilitation. The evaluation comprises of theory, practical and viva examination at the end of each year in addition to project submission.

OBJECTIVES
  • To develop an understanding of anatomy and the physiology of the respiratory system
  • To be able to assist respiratory therapists to monitor patients and perform diagnostic tests
  • To learn how to perform pulmonary function testing and advanced cardio respiratory physiotherapy
  • To be responsible for the assessment, intubation, weaning, extubation and care of mechanically ventilated patients
  • To be able test lung capacity by having patients breathe into an instrument that measures the volume and flow of oxygen while the patient inhales & exhales
  • To be able to provide advanced life support to critically ill patients during transportation
DURATION

Duration : 2 YEARS.

ELIGIBILITY

10+2 with physics, chemistry, and maths/biology with minimum 50% marks.

CAREER AVENUES

After the completion of the course, candidates with diploma in respiratory therapy are eligible to find jobs in private/government hospitals with ICU facilities, surgical intensive care units and medical intensive care units etc. They can also work as respiratory care therapists in home healthcare to train patients and their families on how to take medications to use ventilators and other life support systems in their homes. Therapists also make emergency home visits when necessary for which they get handsomely reimbursed as well.
