About the Orthotic and Prosthetic Technician Program

Orthotic and prosthetic technicians (also referred to as medical appliance technicians) manufacture, fit, repair, and maintain orthotic and prosthetic devices in compliance with the standards and instructions of orthotists and prosthetists.

They are professionals who, as recommended by Physical Medicine Specialists/Orthopedic Surgeons, develop, produce and fit prostheses (artificial limbs) and orthoses (braces, aids, attachments, and remedial devices for restrictive locomotor). Orthotic implants are supports used to strengthen damaged or ineffective joints or muscles or to fix physical defects, such as spinal deformities. Artificial organs and plastic cosmetic implants are the prosthetic products that they specialize in.

These devices provide external support to a part of the body that may be weakened because of neuromuscular or skeletal conditions such as cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, sports injuries or back strain. Other patients may require orthotic devices because they have foot conditions as a consequence of diabetes, high or flat arches, or repetitive stress.

A diploma in orthotic & prosthetic technician teaches the students to be competent with many hand tools and specialized machines used in the fabrication of prosthetic & orthotic devices. The course contents and the training given enables prosthetists / orthotists to work with physicians, therapists and other professionals in the field of rehabilitation in a clinical environment.

The overall objective of the diploma is to train students as prosthetists and orthotists in order to fulfil the growing need of the same and to deliver well-trained staff qualified enough to administer this very specialized style of patient care particular to the field of paramedical sciences.

With an aim to achieve these objectives the course curriculum comprises of lectures and practical demonstration in prosthetic & orthotic laboratories during which students are taught the fundamentals of manufacturing, measuring and fitting of appliances.

This is followed by advanced studies in basic subjects and under the direction and supervision of the faculty students learn to design, fabricate and fit prosthetic or orthotic appliances as the case may be, and attend clinical meetings / conferences, demonstrations and seminars.

COURSE OBJECTIVE
  • To acquire adequate skills required to manage the physically disabled

DURATION

Duration : 2 YEARS.

ELIGIBILITY

10+ 2 with physics, chemistry, biology/math with a minimum score of 50%.

Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible for jobs in hospitals, clinics, laboratories, fitting rooms, rehabilitation centers of hospitals and government agencies.
